ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

ALGEBRA ASSESSMENT

PURPOSE:

  1. To work with "real-life" data to determine the average cost per KWH over a designated time span and to calculate payments under a "level payment plan."
  2. To compare incandescent and fluorescent lighting in terms of energy used and the cost to the consumer.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To demonstrate proficiency in computing and calculating (EHS Problem Solving).
  2. To demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking (EHS Problem Solving).
  3. To demonstrate proficiency in writing (EHS Communication).
  4. To calculate the mean for a set of data (LO 6A1).
  5. To evaluate rational expressions (LO 1B1).
  6. To demonstrate proficiency in social interaction (EHS Personal Growth).

PROCEDURE:

  1. Students will work in groups of four, dividing the calculations among the group so that the goal can be accomplished more quickly.
  2. Each student will be responsible for writing a paragraph explaining whether they think incandescent or fluorescent lighting is better and supporting that decision.

I. COMPUTING AND CALCULATING (32 points total)

(18 points) Each computation on page 1 will be counted as one point

(14 points) Each section on the comparison of light bulbs sheet will be counted as one point

II. WRITING (32 points total)

The state method of scoring writing will be used with focus, support, organization, conventions, and integration being considered.

III. ELMWOOD GRADUATE COMPUTING & CALCULATING RUBRIC - see appendix
