The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is a secret fraternal society that was formed in the southern United States during the post Civil War years. It promoted white supremacy by means of violence and terrorism. It is made up solely of white, American-born protestants. They are hostile to all other groups, especially African Americans, Jews, and Catholics. ( "Ku Klux Klan" Webster's Dictionary ) Because of this hatred toward the different races, the Klan sometimes used violence as a form of superiority. The Klan threatened, beat, and murdered many blacks and their white sympathizers, during the 1920's.

Klan members are known for hiding their identity by wearing robes and hoods. They have also draped sheets over their horses, and rode at night. ("Ku Klux Klan", World Book EncyclopediA). Some Klan members burned crosses and whipped, tortured, and murdered people whose activities angered them. Another thing they are known for is throwing rocks through the windows of houses that belong to the targets of their hatred.
Today, the Ku Klux Klan is still active. They use similar methods of violence that the Klan did in the 1920's.
