Golf in the 1920's and the Bing Crosby Golf Tournament
In the 1920's golf became one of the most popular sports in the
world.
Golf also became a public game, meaning it wasn't just for the rich
anymore, it was for everyone. Public golf courses, which were
generally owned by the local town, began to pop up all over the
coutnry. Anyone in the town or county could play on the course for
very little money. In addition, big golf tournaments were played for
pride and respect not just for the money.
During the 1920's one of the most famous golf players rose to fame:
Bing Crosby. He won many major tournaments during the 1920's. Because
of his popularity and love of the sport, Crosby started the Crosby
Golf Tournament. This tournament is still in existence today. In
fact, it is now played on Pebble Beach Golf Course in California and
all money involved in this tournament goes to charity.
The 1920's was the time when golf became very popular to every class
of people. It was the start of a trend that still thrives today. A
game full of pride and not money.
