Business Communication Class

PageMaker Productions Projects

During the first semester of the 1997-1998 school year, the Business Communications class at Mount Carmel High School completed an Aldus PageMaker Publication project for numerous businesses in Wabash County. The steps involved the following

  1. Students were required to arrange contact with a small business in the county as a business partner with that particular student (if the student could not work this out, the instructor arranged the project).
  2. The student informed of the business owner/manager of his/her project as a two-sided tri-fold brochure that could be used for any business purpose for that company. This included, but was not limited to, advertisement, informational flyer, sales flyer, and informational mailer.
  3. Through on-site visits, telephone conversations, e-mail, facsimile transmissions and/or other methods of communications, the student had to secure needed information, design, layout, and print a rough draft copy for approval.
  4. The student then printed 10 color copies and 100 black and white copies of the document for the business. This means that the local printers would not feel as though we are infringing on their profits.

From a teacher's perspective, this project--having done this same activity with three different classes--is one which fits the RBL grant to the letter. It involves different means of communication skills for students, created interaction between local businesses and our students, develops the students' awareness of how a business and managers really operate, and it enhances the sense of pride that our community has for the school system.

Our students through their project evaluations felt every emotion that the "real world" goes through during everyday operation. From the frustrating not meeting deadlines because of someone else's shortcomings, to the communications breakdowns to the exhilaration of a final product that is something that not only the student is proud of, but the business owner likes as well--this particular product has been a popular activity for the business department at MCHS for the past two years.
