Has anyone had luck using MIDI files as practice accompaniments?

I realise the computer can never substitute for a good accompanist, but
some of us can not afford to pay for an a good pianist (or orchestra) to
hang around.

Are there any ftp sites with common pieces for MIDI? I see the problem with
copyright violations, but there should be plenty of public domain music
around to support the effort.

As a bass-baritone the ability to transpose at will alone would do wonders
for me.
