The many nuances (and spontaneity) that a live accompanist can provide make a live accompanist irreplaceable. That being said, there is a certain merit in an absolutely solid rhythmic accompaniment, and the ability to transpose instantly, and to find an absolute tempo in a flash (and to play with tempo variations in a structured and calculated way). There are thousands of advantages to MIDI/LIVE. These are just a few. Try (I think) cs.ruu.nl That's the largest repository of midi files. Or tune in to comp.music. Unfortunately there are few vocal pieces at this site, and of course they are of varying quality. I have a decent number of vocal pieces (being a vocal coach) that I'd be willing to *swap*.
