Volume / Surface Area / Scale Drawing Project

Algebra I / Keyboarding project

Goal: Design and construct a container that will hold 8 12 oz. pop cans.

Objectives:

  1. To demonstrate knowledge of measurement in the metric system.
  2. To use the concepts of ratio and proportion in scale drawing. (L02A1)
  3. To use volume and surface area skills with practical problems. (L03B1)
  4. To demonstrate proficiency in speaking and writing. (EHS Communications)
  5. To demonstrate proficiency in computation and critical thinking. (EHS Problem Solving)
  6. To demonstrate proficiency in social interaction. (EHS Personal Growth)

Method:

  1. The class will divide into 4 member groups.
  2. Each group will design four containers to hold 8 12 oz. pop cans.
  3. Each person within the group will be responsible for the design and construction of one of the containers and a written report about the project.
  4. Determine the measurements of a 12 oz. pop can and determine the measurements of your container.
  5. Make a 3 - dimensional drawing of your container. Include top, bottom, and side views. Be sure to include the dimensions of the container. (If you are in keyboarding class, you will do this on the computer.)
  6. Make a scale drawing that shows your container flattened out before it is made. Be sure to include the dimensions.
  7. Construct a life-size model.
  8. Write a report that explains your procedure and analyzes the amount of wasted space in your box compared to volume of the pop.
  9. Once each person has determined the wasted space in their carton, the group will give an oral presentation to convince a bottling company to use your design for their new container. Use appropriate data and graphs as needed.

Form of report:

  1. Purpose
  2. Procedure
  3. Data and calculations: ( Be sure to show formulas as well as calculations.)
    1. Dimensions of can
    2. Surface area of can
    3. Volume of can
    4. Dimensions of carton
    5. Surface area of carton
    6. Volume of carton
  4. Results
  5. Analysis: Analyze the amount of wasted space in your carton compared to the volume of pop. Determine which design has the least wasted space and would be most economical to make. Determine which carton would be easiest to display and give reasons.

GRADING:

Projects will be graded on the following criteria. Points will be added and converted to a percentage to determine the final grade.

I. Measurements:

ELMWOOD GRADUATE COMPUTING & CALCULATING RUBRIC-see appendix

II. Scale Drawings:

3 - All drawings are clear, neat, and scaled appropriately.
2 - Most drawings are clear, neat and scaled appropriately.
1 - Drawings are sloppy and the scale somewhat confusing.
0 - Drawings missing.

III. Constructed Model:

3 - Model neat and sturdy. Model will hold 8 pop cans. Creativity used in the design.
2 - Model sturdy. Design clean and simple.
1 - Model incomplete or inaccurately completed so that cans will not fit.
0 - No model.

IV. Written report:

Purpose:

3 - Clear and concise. All objectives covered.
2 - All topics covered, but not presented clearly.
1 - Purpose is incomplete.
0 - No purpose

Procedure:

3 - Clear and concise. All steps explained completely.
2 - All steps included but not presented clearly.
1 - Missing steps.
0 - Procedure not included.

V. Oral Presentation

3 - Student shows confidence in knowledge of subject matter. Presentation clear and informative. Students ate able to defend decisions made.
2 - Student presents project thoroughly and clearly but doesn't defend decisions made.
1 - Presentation is unclear. Student lacks confidence and doesn't speak clearly and distinctly.
0 - No oral presentation attempted

VI. COLLABORATIVE WORKER - I am in charge of my behavior in my group

4

I always stay on task and take whatever role is needed to help the group do well. I participate without being asked and encourage others to participate. I give useful ideas, relate them to what others have said, and give evidence to support them. I help the group consider everyone's ideas.

3

I stay on task and take different roles in the group. I participate without being asked. I give useful ideas and defend them whenever necessary. I consider other people's ideas as well as my own.

2

I need help to stay on task. I need encouragement to participate. I seldom do well. I agree with the group without carefully thinking, or I just like my own ideas.

1

I do not stay on task. I do not participate. I do not give ideas that help the group. Sometimes I do things that keep the group from working.

0

I was removed from my group due to my behavior.

OVERALL PRESENTATION

3

All work is neat and well organized. Evidence of effort identified.

2

Most work is neat and well organized.

1

Work is complete, but the presentation is poorly organized and messy.
