Project Description
The Lake Park High School Honors Chemistry classes
worked on a cooperative project with the Brookfield Zoo. The
project, chosen by the students, was to study the
differences and similarities of the nutritional habits of
Sophomore Honors Chemistry students to zoo animals. The
project started with the Brookfield Zoo choosing eight
animals they felt had interesting eating habits and whose
nutritional information was complete. They sent the three
classes the zoo animals diets, to be broken down into
nutrients. The classes then used this information and a
computer program to find out what they could about the
nutrients in the animals' diets. The students also kept
track of their own diets for a week to determine their
average nutritional intake per day, for use in comparisons.
On December 19th, 1997, the students visited the Brookfield
Zoo, to supplement the information they already had. Three
groups were formed; one went on a commissary tour, the
second met with the zoo's nutritionist and the third took
animal pictures. The final class activity was an inschool
field trip where groups input information they had gathered
into categories and saved them on computer disks. The
steering committee, took this information and with much help
from the school Technical Director and their teacher,
formatted and built this webpage.
